What are chocolate covered raisins?

Chocolate-covered raisins are a well-liked snack made by coating raisins in chocolate (and they are not limited to being a movie theater treat!). First, raisins are dipped into melted chocolate, then left to cool and harden, resulting in a deliciously sweet treat. The chewiness of the raisins pairs perfectly with the creamy richness of the chocolate, creating a delightful combination that’s enjoyed by many. These treats are commonly eaten out of hand as a snack or used to top desserts such as ice cream or yogurt.

Why are homemade chocolate treats the best choice?

We think the main advantage of making homemade chocolate-covered raisins is having full control over the ingredients. You can choose the type of chocolate (dark, milk, or white) and also adjust the sweetness level to your preference. You can even choose the type of raisin (if you search your local stores, you’ll discover that there are a variety of options such as traditional black, golden, flame, green, etc.) Additionally, you can add extras such as nuts, seeds, or shredded coconut for more flavor and texture. Or go crazy and try variants, such as dried currants, cranberries or goldenberries.

Selecting the best raisins for chocolate coating

Look for plump, juicy raisins with rich color. Golden ones are sweeter, while dark ones have a deeper flavor. Pick the type that suits your chocolate best. Choose soft, chewy raisins; avoid dry or hard ones. Ensure they’re moist for better chocolate adhesion and texture. Select fresh raisins with vibrant color and aroma, avoiding dull or stale ones that may affect the flavor.

Chocolate-covered Raisins Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup chocolate (dark, milk, or white chocolate)

Method:

  • If you plan to wash your raisins (which is common in some countries), make sure that they are completely dry before coating them in chocolate.
  • Melt the chocolate. You can do this in a microwave in 20-30-second intervals, stirring after each interval until smooth. Make sure to temper the chocolate if you want it to look shiny and not melt in your hands.
  • After the chocolate has melted, drop the raisins into the bowl of chocolate. Stir them gently with a spoon or fork, making sure each raisin is completely coated in chocolate.
  • Using a fork, remove the chocolate-covered raisins from the bowl, letting any extra chocolate drip off.
  • Arrange the chocolate-covered raisins on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they’re spaced apart to prevent sticking.
  • After removing all the raisins, place the baking sheet or tray in the fridge for about 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate has hardened.
  • Once the chocolate-covered raisins have hardened, take them out of the refrigerator, let them come to room temperature and then place them in an airtight container for storage.

Adult upgrade option: Soak the raisins in rum for a few hours to enhance their flavor. Just make sure to let them dry thoroughly for a few hours before coating them with chocolate.

Enjoy your homemade chocolate-covered raisins as a snack, or use them to top desserts like yogurt, ice cream or oatmeal.
