What is avocado chocolate mousse?

Avocado chocolate mousse is a smooth and creamy dessert made by mixing ripe avocados with chocolate and a few simple ingredients. It tastes just like regular chocolate mousse but uses avocado instead of cream or eggs, so it’s healthier and provides a dairy-free option. The avocado makes it creamy without changing the taste, letting the chocolate flavor shine. It’s a tasty and good-for-you treat. It may be hard to believe that you can make excellent chocolate mousse using avocados, but you’ll just have to trust us on this one until you taste for yourself.

Why use avocado in chocolate desserts?

Avocado is a great choice for chocolate desserts—it adds a rich, creamy texture without the need for cream or butter, making it ideal for anyone who’s lactose intolerant or avoiding dairy. Its mild flavor blends easily with chocolate, so it won’t overpower the other ingredients, making it a smart and delicious substitute. On top of that, avocado is widely considered a healthy ingredient—it’s rich in heart-healthy fats, fiber, and essential vitamins. While we’re not nutritionists and can’t make medical claims, the scientific research supports avocado’s health benefits. For example, a review published in Current Atherosclerosis Reports highlights avocado’s potential role in supporting cardiovascular and metabolic health(source).

How to make avocado chocolate mousse

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 100g (3.5 oz) dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1–2 tbsp milk for a lighter texture

Method:

  1. In a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water (double boiler), gently melt the chopped chocolate until smooth. Let it cool slightly (but not harden).
  2. In a food processor, add the avocado, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Pour in the melted chocolate and blend until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides as needed. If it’s too thick, add a spoonful of milk and blend again until silky smooth.
  4. Spoon the mousse into serving cups and put them in the refrigerator.
  5. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving.
  6. Serve topped with fresh fruit, cocoa nibs, nuts, or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

Enjoy!
