History of Nutella

Nutella is a sweet, creamy chocolate and hazelnut spread with a rich flavor. It was created by Pietro Ferrero in Italy during the 1940s, who originally called it “Pasta Gianduja” and sold it in a solid block that could be sliced and spread on bread. Over time, the recipe evolved into what it is today–a creamy spreadable form that was renamed “Supercrema” and later became “Nutella” in 1964.

The spread we know and love today as Nutella has become a beloved staple in many households. It can be used in a variety of ways, such as spreading it on toast, pancakes, waffles, or using it as a filling for pastries, cakes, and crepes. Some people even enjoy it straight from the jar with a spoon!

How to make Chocolate Hazelnut Spread at home

Homemade Hazelnut Spread, aka “Nutella”, is surprisingly easy to make, and the results are far superior to any store-bought version. With just a handful of high-quality ingredients, you can make the most incredible and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups raw hazelnuts
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Method

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

  • Spread the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and roast them in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the skins start to crack off and the nuts are fragrant.
  • Remove the hazelnuts from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Once they have cooled, transfer them to a clean kitchen towel and rub the towel over the nuts to remove the skins.
  • Place the skinned hazelnuts in a food processor or blender and pulse them until they are finely ground.
  • Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and salt to the food processor or blender along with the hazelnuts. Process the mixture until it is smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Taste the spread and adjust the sweetness or saltiness to your liking.
  • Transfer to a jar or airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to two weeks.

Enjoy on toast, fruit, or in your favorite recipes!
